Oyster, transport and travel in London

Transport for London

Transport for London, or TFL, manages all public transport in London. Visit their website, www.tfl.gov.uk, for transport updates or to plan your journey through the UK capital.

When you plan your trip, please remember that people in London spend approximately one hour commuting to work. Please be aware that you need to know the post code of your destination (ADC College, your host family or work placement) when you plan your journey. This way, you will be able to plan the three different journeys in advance.

Fill in the empty fields with your current location and the post code of your destination. You can change the time of your trip by clicking ‘change time’ and choosing your preferred time of arrival. Different options of travel might be displayed. Click on ‘View details’ to show the details of your whole journey. ‘Travel options & accessibility’ allows you to choose bus travel only or view the routes with the fewest changes. Click on the arrow to display your return journey.

Oyster is a plastic smartcard which can hold “pay as you go” credit, Travelcards and Bus & Tram season tickets. You can use an Oyster card to travel on buses, the Tube, trams, the DLR, the London Overground and most National Rail services in London.

Make sure you pay the right fare by touching in and out on the yellow card readers at the start and end of your journey on the Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services.

Only place your Oyster card on a yellow card reader at the start of your bus and tram journey.

Readers are located:

·Inside buses when you board

·On tram platforms before you board

Don't touch out again when you get off.

If you've got enough “pay as you go” credit or a valid Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass, the card reader will show a green light. If a red light shows, you can't travel again until you either:

·Top up your “pay as you go” credit

Renew the season ticket on your Oyster card

On the Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services, place your Oyster card on the yellow card reader to touch in at the start and out at the end of your journey to pay the right fare.

Readers are located at station ticket gates, platforms and entrances and exits.

If the gates are already open, you must still touch in and out as normal.

If you've got enough “pay as you go credit” or a valid Travelcard, you'll see a green light. If there are gates, they'll open. If you don't have enough credit or a valid Travelcard, a 'seek assistance' message will be displayed and the gates won't open. You can't travel again until you either:

·Top up your “pay as you go” credit

·Renew the season ticket on your Oyster card

·Buy a paper ticket

.When you use “pay as you go”, you need to touch in at the start and touch out at the end of all Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail journeys. If you don't, you can't be charged the right fare for your journey. This is called an 'incomplete journey' and you will be charged a maximum fare. If you don't touch in at the start of a journey, you're also liable to pay a Penalty fare or you could be prosecuted.

If you're using “pay as you go” on the Tube, DLR, London Overground or National Rail services in London and don't touch in or out, your journey may be incomplete and you could be charged a maximum fare of up to £8.60.

If you make an incomplete journey it is not known where you started or ended your journey meaning TFL is unable to charge you the right fare.

When you touch in at the start of a Tube, DLR, London Overground or National Rail journey in London, up to £8.60 is deducted from your “pay as you go” credit.

When you touch out at the end, the right fare for your journey is worked out and the amount deducted from your credit is adjusted.

If you don't touch in and out correctly, the amount you should be charged is not known, so a maximum fare of up to £8.60 is deducted from your credit.

Maximum fares don't count towards capping and don't apply on buses or trams.

.When stations are very busy the gates may be open to control crowds and ensure that people can leave the station quickly and safely. If so, you might not be able to touch out but this will be fixed when you touch in to start your next journey.

Pink card readers are located at some Tube and London Overground stations. They don't record the start or end of your journey but tell which route you've taken so you can be charged the right fare. Some routes are cheaper than others, such as those which avoid Zone 1.

If you have to change trains during a journey at the same station and are using “pay as you go”, place your Oyster card on the yellow card reader at the start of your journey to touch in and again at the end to touch out. If you see a pink card reader when you change trains, make sure you place your Oyster card on it so TFL knows what route you have taken and can charge you the right fare.

Unless you need to change stations, you don't need to touch your Oyster card on any other yellow card readers during your journey. If you do, you may be charged for two separate journeys.

If you do need to change stations during your journey, make sure you touch out on the yellow card reader as you leave and touch in again as you enter the other station. Sometimes you may also have to do this when changing from one train operator to the other.

.If you touch in to start a journey and then decide you don't want to make it or you can't because of service disruption and touch out again to exit your Oyster card will be charged. TFL applies charges to discourage fare evasion. However, you may be able to get a refund if this happens. Speak to a member of staff at the station or call the Customer Services team on 0343 222 1234 to get a refund (see TfL call charges).

Lessons

The sessions start at 9.00 o’clock every day and will be delivered both in the morning and afternoon. Should you want to book any visit or show in London, you might want to schedule them for either Wednesday or Friday afternoons from 2 pm. Remember to allow yourself enough time to travel around London. Evenings are free from approximately 6.00 pm for you to plan whatever you like.

Your detailed timetable will be finalised when the pre-arrival questionnaires are returned to ADC. It will be available on the first day of your course to avoid confusion with any other provisional version we could provide you with before your arrival.

The tutorials will be led by YOU. Bring any queries or doubts you might have about your own or your students’ English abilities or anything else that might concern you. Some teachers find it useful to save questions for the tutorial. The time with your tutor is yours to maximise and make your own.

There is a fast Wi-Fi connection available at ADC College. Bring your laptop and surf freely. We also have a number of computer stations with a fast broadband connection where you can check your emails, print your boarding passes etc.

Having your own device can be useful, since many sessions will refer to creative or motivating websites. If you decide to leave your laptop at home, please bring a memory stick in case you need to store material or information.

In London

The cheapest and most convenient way to travel around London is to get an Oyster card.

Oyster is a smartcard which holds Pay As You Go credit, Travel card and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets. Use it to travel on bus, tube, tram, DLR, overground trains and most National Rail services in London.

You can buy an Oyster card from the underground and train stations in London or from accredited newsagents by depositing five pounds. You will be able to redeem your deposit once you return the card.

Bear in mind that London in divided into zones: from central London (zone 1) to the outskirts of greater London (up to zone 9). ADC College is in the middle – zone 5. Travel costs will vary according to the zones you pass through.

Please note that cash is no longer accepted on buses since July 2014. London commuters will need an Oyster card, pre-paid ticket or contactless payment cards to travel on buses.

To find out more about travel costs and transport in London, please visit:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/

The quickest way to get to central London is the London Midland direct service to Euston from Harrow & Wealdstone station (approx. 12 min): http://www.londonmidland.com/

We suggest you consult your bank to make sure you can use cashpoints in the UK and to find out about commission fees and the exchange rate between pounds and euros. It might be more convenient for you to exchange your money before the trip.

You may want to check with your mobile phone provider that you can make phone calls from the UK. Should you want to get a UK SIM card to call abroad, please do not hesitate to ask the ADC team for help.

Should you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We shall be pleased to speak to you.

We look forward to meeting you in London!
